Toys are a part of all our lives. When we are young there's nothing more important to us than our family our friends and our toys. As we age, our toys become a thing that is more involved, more impassioned, and much more expensive. Yet from our most early youth straight through till our dying days, one thing seem clear; the toys we own aren’t necessarily the toys we want; and the toys we want are almost always too expensive for our tastes.
When we’re younger, if we wanted action figures, our parents said no and we had stuffed animals. Later on, if we wanted a certain video game system our parents said no, you already have last year’s system. As we get older still and our toys become our cars; we reflect back on our dead uncle and his great Thunderbird but we’re resigned to driving around the old Plymouth Sundance. Later on still, if we’ve made it in life and we own a great house, there is always the nicer house of our more successful friend. As the toys become our extracurricular things; we look at our boat and all we can think is that we want a helicopter. Maybe in old age, as we ebb on slowly towards the big sleep, we’re more accepting of the things we’ll never have and we’re able to enjoy some sort of serenity. But by and large the toys are all the same; from the first kick up to the last kick out. We all want what we don’t have. That can be a tough pill to swallow; we’re a little bit bitter and a little bit resentful about the toys we don’t have which have followed us our whole lives. It’s these toys in the attic that have first captivated us, then alluded us; finally thwarting us and it’s a gnawing sensation which just won’t leave us alone. We all seem to take on more than we can handle; it’s with this knowledge that we travel our entire lives: “I’ll never be able to do this; how the heck can I accomplish anything here; what is it I’m faced with I don’t already know?” It’s one of the great questions we’re faced with in our ere short lives. So I offer, why waste time and energy concerned with the things we can’t have when we can be blessed with all that we already do?
