When the Internet first started all we had for a connection was dial-up. It was a very slow connection and their were times that you would be trying to get on for hours. DSL has come to our rescue as an alternative to dial-up. DSL is faster and has an instant connection so you don't have that long wait to get on like we did with dial-up.
DSL uses the same line usually that your dial-up did but at a much faster rate. This is important for a number of treason. Dial-up made downloading things a real hassle as people would download stuff and almost get done and you would get cut off. That was so frustrating because you would have to start all over. Many small businesses are being run at home and having an dial-up connection wasn't exactly the bet way to run a business. With DSL connection it made running a home business more profitable and easier to do. Another thing about DSL is the cost isn't really that much more than dial-up, but gives you more advantages. Cheap DSL service is one of the reasons for the popularity of DSL. People want a faster connection speed than dial-up and DSL does that for them. A lot of people don't have access to broadband so DSL is just perfect for them. DSL will continue to grow as more people get away from dial-up. People who live out in the country or away from major cities can't get broadband DSL is something that they can get and it works better than dial-up. Many companies carry DSL along with dial-up, but I don't see dial-up being around much longer. DSL is getting as cheap price wise as dial-up so most companies will do away with dial-up and just go with DSL. Another advantage of DSL is their are various speeds so the prices will vary along with download speeds. Their is something for everyone with DSL. Businesses like it because it gives than an affordable way to do business if they don't want to use broadband. Broadband is a little more expensive, but it is faster and doesn't present other problems. For now DSL will be most people's choice until they find something better for their situation. It will be interesting to see how long DSL lasts before something else comes along to replace it
